Everpure EV9282-01 H-1200 Replacement Cartridge, #1 and #2 Review

I've always had good experience with Everpure filter products, so when it came time to replace my cartridges, I didn't hesitate to order another set from Amazon.

Bundle set issue resolved: it seems that Amazon has finally fixed the issue highlighted by other reviewers who received only one of the two H-1200 cartridges needed. When I received my package, it had both cartridges with a big red sticker marked "sold as a set".

Removal: replacing the cartridges was a bit more difficult than expected (and that's why I gave the product 3 stars, the stars are not related to the quality of the filters). If you're like me and you waited a bit too long to replace these, you might notice a bit of calcification and oxidation around the top of the cartridges. As a result, I really had to put some muscle into unscrewing the cartridges (counter-clockwise).

Caution - before removing the cartridges, make sure the water valve is shut off and you've drained the water, by opening the faucet. I noticed that by completely draining the water, the second cartridge was bit easier to remove.

Replacement - once I successfully removed both cartridges, I made sure to properly clean the inner lining and remove any excess water. It took me a few trials to get it just right, but by the second cartridge, I realized what would make it a bit easier to install. The key is to use the palm of your hand and push the cartridge all the way up BEFORE turning it clock-wise to lock into place. Don't be afraid to put a bit of force behind this push.

After the installation was done, I ran the water for a good 5 minutes (recommended time is 3 minutes, but I found this inadequate for removing air bubbles, etc.). Keep in mind that even after a couple of days of use, you may still see "bubbles" in your water cup until the carbon filters in the cartridges are nice and soaked.

Recycling the cartridges: I wasn't sure what to do with the old cartridges and it didn't seem right to just throw it in the garbage. With a bit a research, I found that Everpure's website has some information on how to recycle these cartridges ([...]). Luckily for me, my neighborhood uses Waste Management for picking up recycling and they already have a deal with Everpure. All I had to do was just throw them in my recycling bin and Waste Management did the rest.

Overall, I'm happy with these new cartridges and having fresh water for another year or so.

Septic Protector Filtrol 160TM Review

I thought this was going to be great, but turns out to be a nightmare. The cover is hard to put on, the o-ring gets pinched, and the filter has to be cleaned every 3 wash cycles. That wouldn't be bad if the filter was easy to clean, but it is a mukky mess. It clogs up and overflows, and if the o-ring is pinched it could flood your basement. The only way I can clean the filter is by scrapping the muck off with my fingernails, and then I have to do that every couple wash cycles. I wish I had just stuck with the women's nylon sock in the sink.

As the Joni Mitchell song goes: "Don't it always seem to go/that you don't know what you got till it's gone...." There are certain things you expect to miss when you leave the area you've spent your life in thus far; then there are those you could have never fathomed. Having decent tasting water out of the tap was never an issue, and a quick run through a Brita filter made it more than adequate. So how was I to know that the place I now call home would have water that would taste like it had dirt in it, while simultaneously smelling like cat pee? I've owned this unit now about 8 1/2 months. I use it nearly every day up to 3 times a day. I use it for drinking, for my ultrasonic humidifier, to top off my little aquarium and to water house plants.

for drinking, I need to run the end product thru a Brita filter in order to remove that "distilled" flavor. it has been a godsend for my ultrasonic humidifier.. I live in Dallas and we have some of the hardest water I've ever had to deal with.

My only niggle on this is the capacity. it would be fine if I wasn't relying so heavily on my humidifier for my sinuses. but without it. the entire house fills up with that awful white mineral dust that gets in to everything and actually can trigger my asthma.

My house plants also love it. our tap water in Dallas is so hard it actually can kill the houseplants.

My fish tanks are doing much better on the distilled water as the hardness of the tap water destroys the little filters by gumming up the parts with hard, mineral deposits and I have not lost one filter or a fish since switching to the distilled water.

bear in mind, this thing puts off a ton of heat.. it's like having a space heater on the 750 watt setting while it's running. I tuck mine in the back bathroom in the part of the house I rarely use because of the heat. especially in the summer.
