I purchased this water dispenser for my office after the old one quit working. Having read quite a few reviews, I felt comfortable that I was getting a good product.

Once set up and filled with water, we discovered that the water it dispensed had a horrible chemical taste and smell. I immediately called Avanti, who told me they do not warranty the taste of the water dispensed, only the unit itself, and was given a lengthy process to try to flush the unit out and get rid of the bad taste. It involved dumping in bleach and much rinsing - and took quite a while. At the end, the water still tasted just as bad. Since Avanti customer service had these rinsing directions at hand to give when I called, I must assume they are aware of the problem with the dispensers and probably field these type of complaints frequently.

Since we were unable to return the unit, I continued flushing water through it hoping to lessen the bad taste. Finally I poured in white vinegar and some water and let it sit all day, and then drained it out and rinsed several times. Success - water finally tastes good to drink. The unit seems to be working properly now, but I am disappointed that a product purchased brand new should have required that much work in order to use it for its intended purpose.

It works really well and the water tastes good. I have two small issues that would make it 5 stars.
1. The filter does not reach the bottom of the bottle so you lose a bit and have to refill more than necessary.

2. The metal on the cap is a little loose and when you open or close the lid it moves around and feels like it is cutting into the plastic.

Is it possible to create a steel straw and lose all of the plastic parts? I would pay 50-100 for a high quality comete stainless steel filtered water bottle that is 100% made in the USA. I'm sure that I am not the only one that would.

This system was easy to setup. It included easy to follow instructions and I managed to get it working in only a few minutes. Pure, great tasting water was ready in a jiffy! Water purification rate is about 1 gallon per hour: I keep rotating and storing two, 1 gallon bottles every day to fill up water and works out perfectly for me.
This system was exactly what I was looking for: a reverse osmosis system, portable and not requiring any cutting and gluing of my existing pipes as I live in an apartment and am not permitted to modify the plumbing. I was hesitant to buy, especially after reading some of the other reviews criticizing the setup which sounded complicated. But I have to say rest assured, setup is very easy and intuitive. Not to mention great tasting reverse osmosis water right in your home.
I did not test the water quality after installation myself, but I believe the numerous reviews around the web praising this system for removing impurities, especially heavy metals and other toxic chemicals. Regular tap water at my place tastes sweetish (probably from lead from the pipes) and smells strongly of chlorine, but the reverse osmosis water from this system has no such obnoxious odors or tastes associated with it, indicating highly pure water that also removes chlorine. I will soon invest in a water-purity indicator and update this review again.
I have been using this system for more than two months now and feel this is an absolute great value for money and saves me a lot of trips to the local grocery store to get safe but expensive 'reverse osmosis' water. Again, I highly recommend this system to anyone looking for a portable reverse osmosis drinking water solution.

Let me start by saying these filters work great! Our glasses, ceramics and polymer utensils come out super clean and we use much less detergent. The real problem is we have VERY hard water in San Antonio. The ion exchange process in this filter is the same process as any water softener, but you can't include the saline recharge in an under the sink filter. My first filter lasted almost two months - I'm hoping the next ones last a bit longer, but I'm not holding my breath. Honestly, this filter system just has too much waste for my taste. Throwing away this large chunk of polymer every couple months is not good for my landfill; while the cartridge may or may not be recyclable in your community, the poly beads inside are definitely not. If you're handy, you can rig up your own salinated backwash system to make them last longer.

We are lucky because when we ordered the house we had a loop made for our soft water filter. That's why I was able to easily hook this up without a problem, I also have decent amount of plumbing knowledge. If you do not have a water loop you will somehow have to find out where your water lines are in your house and open up the wall and make a loop, if that is to much for you either get a plumber to do it or just go for a under the sink filter if you only want it for drinking purposes.

I am very pleased with this filter since my hard water conditioner doesn't take out any of the bad stuff. You can feel it when you are taking a shower, our clothes come out without a smell after washing them, and our dishes do not spot anymore. I still have our RO filter hooked up to our sink but that's mainly for taste and to catch what this filter might not catch.

I do not recommend this if you are not able to hook this up and don't want to pay a plumber to attach it. If you can hook it up get it, you wont be sorry.

Tersano lotus LWT100 Water Treatment System Review

I live in Los Angeles where the water from the tap tastes like bleach. I used to buy 2.5 gallon containers of water every week. I have tried Brita and I guess I just have a picky palette because I still preferred bottled water. That is until now. The water treated by the machine tastes like bottled water, it has almost no taste at all. And the water is almost sweet tasting. I know the price of the treatment system is off putting, but it is well worth it and I do not have to lug water to my car then from my car to my condo. The machine does make a hummimg noise when it is in operation, and a louder sound when the water is dispensed, but it takes less than ten minutes to process a half a gallon of water. I consider this an investment which will "pay for itself" since I no longer have to buy water from the local Vons/Ralphs.

Update: I bought the replacement filter, just in case, and it says on the box that it will last for 365 gallons. I don't know if I drink a gallon of water a day, but $40 per year for a filter is okay by me.

Update 2 (11/17/06): I have read "Snappy's" review and I find several things in the review to be just incredible:
1. "The unit itself is quite large and dwarfed everything else in my kitchen." The unit is a little bigger than a coffee maker. Much smaller than my refrigerator which is also in my kitchen.

2. "However the water made my tongue tingle and I developed a headache and a rash on my chest the very next day!" First of all, in Snappy's profile, he lives in Chicago, and I have family in Chicago, and the water from the tap tastes great. If I lived in Chicago I would not need the treatment system. Second, headache and rash on chest. I have been drinking the processed water since August and I have not had a single headache or a rash which could be attributed to the treatment system. In fact I have had no rashes ever.

I wouldn't be writing a reply if I didn't love the product. I have reviewed other things on Amazon, and have given good reviews and bad ones as well. Look at Snappy's reviews. You be the judge.
