Designed to be used as a post filter to remove or reduce fluoride, lead, arsenic, and MTBE. These are used in conjunction with ceramic filters, and screw onto the bottom threads. For use with gravity filter systems such as the Big Berkey and British Berkefeld systems that use white ceramic filters. Not for use with Black Berkey filters. Technical Specifications: MTBE: The PF-4 is manufactured to exceed ANSI/NSF Standard 53 which requires that MTBE be reduced by at least two thirds from an influent rate (water going in) of 15ppb to an effluent rate (water going out) of less than 5ppb (> 95% reduction*). LEAD: Tests have shown that when 2000 gallon (7,600 liters) of influent water at a concentration of lead of 200 ppb pass through 200 grams of media at a flow rate of 1 gpm (3.8 lpm), the lead level was reduced to less than 1ppb (>99% reduction). FLUORIDE: Testing for fluoride was based on 20-30ppm of the ion in the influent aqueous solution at a flow rate of no more than 3 gpm (11 lpm) per cubic foot of media. Results of < 1ppm of the fluoride ion in the effluent were typical for the media (>95% reduction). Under optimum conditions, effluent concentrations of less than 50 ppb were readily achieved (>99.75% reduction). REPLACEMENT: Under normal conditions it is recommended that PF-4 elements be replaced at six-month intervals (Actual capacity is dependent on the presence of other competing contaminants in the source water. High levels of total organic carbons, volatile organic compounds or certain inorganic minerals may reduce the capacity and efficiency of these elements.)

I wanted these fluoride filters to work, I really did.

After running 15 gallons of city tap water (with an average ppm fluoride content of 0.30 to 0.60) through 2 x Berkey black filters and 2 x PF-2 fluoride filters I sent this sample of "filtered" water to 3M Industries for a fluoride concentration test. The results confirmed that these so-called "fluoride filters" DON'T actually filter out very much fluoride at all, if any.

3M Lab Result: 0.36 ppm of FLUORIDE (remaining in the water filtered through these PF-2 "fluoride" filters).

"The fluoride concentration result for the sample you submitted is listed above. This result was obtained using state-of-the-art equipment for accuracy. The method of testing is the fluoride ion selective electrode." (3M)

So if you just want to KEEP the fluoride in your "fluoride filtered" drinking water while adding some PVC leach-age with a sprinkling of aluminium into your drink, go ahead and blow some $$ on this rubbish.

Alternatively you could go and buy some plastic pipe fittings from the local hardware store, throw in some aluminum shavings and hang those in the "filtered" water chamber of your Berkey - for a mere fraction of the cost.

I bought this to save money on bottled water and to reduce waste. Makes fresh, clean water. Only 2 complains about it are...

1) Flap on spout is flimsy--VERY! It seems like it's hanging on by a thread. I lost it already once and Brita was great...I called and they sent me out a whole new lid at no charge (which I didn't necessarily need but that's how they do it.)

2) Over flow goes into handle and will leak everywhere. I guess having an over flow run off is good but it can be annoying to wait for it to: A) drain and B) have it leak all over (it just drains out of bottom of the handle). I just try to be careful not to over fill to avoid this annoyance.

Besides that, great product. Filters can be expensive but if you're willing to look, you can find a good price now and then. CVS also sells universal filters that fit this and other brand pitchers. I bought them in a pinch and they seem to work just as well. Bonus bottle is great, I use it almost everyday.

I purchased this to remove flouride and other contaminants from the municipal water supply. It was easy to assemble... took about 15 minutes. This works great for our family of four. We use about 2 gallons per day. I think you could stretch it to a family of six if you refill it more than once per day.

What to expect:
1) The 1st filter cycle is slow, and you need to throw away the first filtration. So just fill it up all the way and let it finish overnight to get this "break-in" out of the way.
2) You need to break a good flow with the black filters a little bit before you add the flouride filters. 1 or 2 refills should do it. It says this in the instruction manual.
3) The flouride filters reduce your overall capacity of filtered water by about 20%. This is partly because the filters displace the water, and partly because the gravity feed is not strong enough to completely fill the bottom chamber. It makes sense when you see it in person.

After a refill or 2, your black filters will speed up and filter the water faster. Then you can add the flouride filters. I cannot imagine a better filtering system for this price. We are very pleased with this system. Every night I add 2 gallons of tap water to the top chamber. Every morning, everything has filtered to the bottom. Easy. efficient and effective. A family of six could use this if the top chamber is refilled sometime during the day.

Five Stage Ion Exchange Filter (Pack of 8) Review

I purchased the two pack replacement filters for Zerowater,
and the quality is vastly inferior to the original filter that came
with the product. Seems like a bait and switch; you buy the
pitcher and the first batch is good, then you are supposedly
hooked on the promises of the product.

Problem: the replacement filters have a fishy smell, and last about
1/4 of the time that the original filter did -- with same input tap
water and same usage. Something is not right here. The filters
seem to also be smaller than the original cylinder design,
shown in pictures, meaning the company made a filter product
change - probably to save manufacturing cost -
which reduces the amount of costly resins they have use.

I recommend DO NOT BUY, until the problems are corrected.
Alternative pitcher filters: Brita or Culligan. Or install a
faucet reverse-osmosis system.

We have city water and wanted a whole house filtration option. We went with two filters, one pre-filter Pentek ECP1-20BB Pleated Cellulose Polyester Filter Cartridge, 20" x 4-1/2", 50 Microns (goes from 50 micron to 1 micron in one filter, used as a pre-filter, which will improve the life of this filter), and this 0.5 micron filter.

You may ask yourself, why is this filter more expensive than something you get for half the price at a big box store. Well not all filters are created equally.

Most carbon filters are 5 micron, this is 0.5 micron. The cheap filters can filter 5 microns at a trickle, open the faucet, and you are loosing microns, where this filter can filter 0.5 microns with the faucet all the way open at your maximum flow rate. This is a long life, high flow filter and the cheap ones will drastically cut down your flow rate and you will need to change them more often. Many filters will make claims on how good they are but the difference is this filter is (NSF/ANSI) standard 53 certified which means it's rated to remove protozoan cysts. Right now there are no other filters in the market that can provide this high of filtration with minimal reduction in flow rate. Be sure to compare GPH when purchasing. Usually, the higher the filtration, the lower the GPH (gallons per hour). The cheap filters claim to have great filtration, but this is at a very low GPH. This filter has the flow rate of a 10 micron filter, but it filters down to 0.5 micron (that and the NSF/ANSI 53 certification is the real difference) In a whole house filtration system, you need great filtration and high GPH and this filter has them both. That's what you are paying for when you spend the extra money on this filter.

Since adding this filter, our water is excellent in taste (it's actually tasteless and better than any bottled water) and has no odor. Our showers are much more enjoyable and we feel extra clean bathing with such pure water. Itchy skin and dry scalp are a thing of the past. Our skin feels so healthy now that chlorine is removed from our bathing water. I can't express enough, the difference these filters will make in your life. The investment will improve your life and the life of your plumbing, plumbing fixtures, HVAC humidifier, hot water tank, rubber gaskets, and appliances. It will save you in the long run.
