AquaCera CeraGrav LP-5 Replacement Ceramic Candle Filter Review

I bought one of these when I bought the CeraGrav LP-5 Gravity Filter system; it was on Amazon's 'buy together' recommendation, and I thought it'd be nice for a backup. Because of the slowness of the filters, I ended up using this with the two that came with the filter.

This 'replacement' filter comes in a plain white box, with a sticker stating it's a replacement filter. It's whiter than the Doulton's that came with the filter system, and, unlike them (which state they're "Made In England"), these have no text on the pipe end. The washers and plastic seem a bit smaller, but it could be my imagination. The official Doulton filters came in a box listing all the things they filter as well as their model; these don't: I'm not even sure they're 'supersterasyl' ones (beyond the seller stating they are). (For a picture, look at the CeraGrav LP-5 page, where you can see how this is different than the other two in my system.)

I don't know if the differences are merely cosmetic, but I'm less than enthused about not knowing what I'm actually buying, especially when it comes to something this important.

Update: After a month of use, I haven't had any issues --- I haven't gotten sick off the pond water I've been dumping into my cistern, at any rate.

I love this Frostfire water filter because the carbon block filter it uses is not proprietary. You can find these common-sized carbon block filters anywhere and they last substantially longer than some more expensive proprietary filters found in other systems. I even swapped out the included 5 micron filter with a .5 micron filter and the stream is still very powerful. This Frostfire filter comes with several adapters to fit to your faucet as well as a housing wrench to loosen the housing to replace your filter. The instructions, which are on the side of the box, are simple. It's important to run water though the system after inserting a new filter to flush out filter particulates. If there's something that's missing from this product it is some sort of aerator or sprayer that clips on to the filter's faucet that breaks up the water stream so it's not so powerful at times. Nicely built. The taste of the water is night and day. No more soily and chlorine taste! Would buy again and it's great for gifts.

Mine does not look like the picture. All white, no blue. Easy to install. No leaks. Instructions were helpful both written and the photos. Everything I needed was in the box. I did NOT have to go to the hardware store and purchase ANY other hardware to complete the installation. Even came with the Teflon tape. However, my city pressure is poor so I also purchased separately the Watts Booster Pump kit. It also came with everything necessary. Oh my goodness...what a difference a booster pump makes. Then I purchased a Watts 6 gallon water tank. Because the 3 gallon was not sufficient. It is so nice to have all the fresh clean water one needs on demand. Rather than lugging bottled water around.

We draw our water from a spring and have some sediment problems, so we have put in a five filter graduated series. The primary filter is a 20 micron string wound which normally lasts 20-24 days (the output pressure falls to 13psi). I was looking for a less expensive product that hopefully would last longer. This product would clog to less than 10psi in 24 hours twice now. I do not know if it is a less than 20 micron product or what the problem could be. So I'm stuck with a product that will not do the job.

My first problem was I couldn't open the caps on the unit which were recessed into the base in order for me to change the filters. They were sealed and stuck in the unit. I called customer service and they said that would send me a new unit with twist caps since this was the latest system. I don't know why they sent me the defective unit in the first place. After changing the unit, I installed the filters which was not easy to install. After a month, the water pressure dropped to where I could barely get any water out of the filters. I called customer service. They told me they now manufactured new filters in which more sediment would be allowed to pass through and not clog the filters. After two months with these filters, I had sediment floating in my water. I called customer service and they sent me new filters. The final climax for me is when I tried to change the filters and now couldn't get filter A out of the housing unit. It was stuck in there. The instruction leaflet recommended using filter B to turn filter A but I couldn't do it. It wouldn't move. I have now given up with this company and their defective units. In summary this water filter cost me for the unit, a plumber to install it of $300 and the most aggrevation I have had in purchasing any device ever. I highly recommend that anyone reading this do not purchase this unit. I have never written a review before but I feel obligated to inform you. I have owned many water purifiers in the past. This is the only one I have had a problem with.
