Back when I first started filtering, using brita pitchers, I was on a university water system that had been grandfathered past some important water regulations. You could smell the heavy metals coming off the water. It probably wasn't a mistake to replace those filters early and often, but now I'm on a better system and I mostly filter to remove a slight aftertaste in the water that I assume comes from treatment chemicals. The metering helps me keep track so I don't replace too early or too late and get the full recommended life out of my filters. As a bonus, it also helps me keep better track of how much water I'm consuming.

When you first turn the water on, the meter powers on automatically, and to make things easier it temporarily turns on a green backlight to make it easier to see without stooping down. When you replace the filter, the count automatically resets for flushing and then starts the count over.

It does feel a bit cheap in construction, as another reviewer noted, but for what it's worth, I've had mine for two years without any construction related issues.
