I wanted a carbon block filter. I have access to water from tap, bottled, RO and carbon block systems and for my needs at home, the carbon block is the best solution. I got this and installed it directly on the cold tap at the kitchen sink (no second drinking water spigot). It cuts the flow slightly, but it's much faster than a refrigerator filter. We still have full flow for hot water which is what we'd typically use for high-volume dish washing and so on.

I rate this down one star because the system comes with a 20001 cartridge which is not my choice. I had to buy a 70001 cartridge separately and I don't have a use for the 20001. I would prefer a choice when I purchased the system or to have them unbundled.

I recommend the 70001 cartridge for this housing. This is the best carbon block cartridge for the Dupont 10" filter housing. This one has NSF/ANSI rated health effects that are superior to the 20001 or 40001 models for example. All of the carbon block cartridges work the same way and offer some improvement, but only this 70001 is actually rated to remove more than odor/taste, and particulates. It is rated by the NSF/ANSI standard 53 to remove lead, atrazine, lindane, as well as cysts, bacteria and viruses.

Check your water company's federally-mandated Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). It will indicate any violations of EPA standards. The most common violation for my water company is the presence of coliform bacteria. These are usually harmless bacteria, but they present because they're easy to culture. However, they indicate a greater chance of the presence of some harmful bacteria. In my semi-rural area, the source is usually livestock waste. The water company addresses that issue, and this filter will help if they ever miss their goal.

My water company does the heavy-lifting to deliver my household drinkable water from a tested well. I don't need expensive and highly inefficient RO that removes any taste from the water, after which you have to add minerals back in and so on. This carbon block cartridge does what I need better than RO, and for considerably less upfront and recurring costs.
